How to Measure a Closet (for Built-in Storage or Wardrobe)

Closet width, depth, height, plus door and electrical positions, the data set IKEA, Container Store, and custom designers need.

A custom closet system can transform 1-2 m² of awkward space into 4× the storage. The catch: it has to fit precisely. Five measurements give a designer everything needed for a first proposal.

왜 측정하나

  • Internal width × depth × height
  • Door opening dimensions and swing
  • Electrical outlets and light positions
  • Floor evenness and ceiling angle

준비물

  • iPhone with Ruler AR (Manual Room Builder for irregular shapes)
  • Length mode

단계별 안내

  1. Internal width. Wall to wall, at three heights (top, middle, bottom). Old houses are not square.
  2. Internal depth. Front of opening to back wall. Note any pipes or built-in jutting into the space.
  3. Internal height. Floor to ceiling. Note if there's a step or threshold at the entrance.
  4. Door opening. Width and height of the door opening separately from the internal closet. Closets with hinged doors have less usable depth.
  5. Electrical and light. Outlet positions, ceiling light position. Most closet systems work around these, note exact locations.

  • Walk-in closets benefit from corner systems, measure both diagonal and orthogonal
  • Floor often slopes toward door for drainage, closets aren't perfectly square

흔한 실수

  • Measuring entry door but not internal closet width
  • Skipping the depth check, pipes inside the closet eat usable space

자주 묻는 질문

How deep is a typical wardrobe?

55-60 cm, fits a hanger comfortably. Less than 55 cm: cramped. More than 60: wastes interior space.
