How to Measure for a Washing Machine
Width, depth, height, hookup positions, door swing, five dimensions for any installation, front-load or top-load.
Front-load washers swing the door out (need clearance); top-loaders open upward (need ceiling clearance). Both styles ship in similar boxes around 60×60×85 cm. Here's what to measure for each.
Why measure this
- Cabinet/alcove fit
- Hose reach
- Door swing (front-load)
- Top clearance (top-load)
What you need
- iPhone with Ruler AR
- Length mode
Step by step
- Cabinet width. Most washers are 60 cm wide. Some compact models 50 cm. Tap wall to wall.
- Cabinet depth. Most washers 55-65 cm deep. Add 5-10 cm clearance for hoses behind.
- Cabinet height. Most washers 85 cm tall. If stacking with a dryer, double this and check ceiling.
- Door swing (front-load). Front-load door opens 180°, needs full width of door arc in clear space.
- Hookups. Water inlet, drain, electrical, gas (if dryer is gas). Photograph and measure positions.
Tips
- Top-loaders need 30+ cm of vertical clearance above for the lid to open
- Stacking kit needed if dryer goes on top of washer
Common mistakes
- Forgetting hose reach, usually needs 1-1.5 m
- Buying full-size when alcove is compact-size only
